Advanced Training
After pups have completed their puppy training, they are matched with a client who has completed the application and interview process. Then training is tailored for that client's needs. After they complete four to six months of advanced training, New Leash trainers work in the home with the client and their dog to help them learn to work as a team. This process can take up to another six months, depending on the situation and the needs.
The dog is then certified as a Service Dog. New Leash trainers are "on call" if the client needs any further training or has any problems with their dog. All New Leash Assistance Dogs are re-certified annually.
It takes approximately $10,000 to train a Service Dog. There is no fee charged to the client for the dogs.
Service Dogs enable their owners to function in the workplace, attend school and interact socially in ways that were never possible before their dogs came into their lives. People with disabilities who were previously ignored now have an automatic ice-breaker and social magnet at their sides.
Many or our clients report that the most important thing their Service Dog does is to force them to get out of bed every morning and keep going. Comments like…”You can’t think about how bad you feel with a cold nose in your face; My dog gets me out of myself and gives me something else to care about”; and “I'm never alone or so isolated anymore,” affirm our mission and our efforts.
New Leash trains for all physical disabilities except for guide dogs. The dogs are placed with clients at no charge. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit agency and all training is paid with donations. Clients must be able to provide premium food, vet care and grooming.
